Tamil-American ophthalmologist, educator, as well as researcher Balamurali Ambati became the world’s youngest doctor at the age of seventeen in 1995. He is currently the Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences & Director of Corneal Research at the University of Utah. His life is highly inspiring and known as ‘Real Life Doogie Howser’ for having keen interests in research and exploring the new forms of treatment of diseases. From the early childhood, Ambati has been exceptionally skilled in several fields of science.
Ambati belongs to an educated and intellectual family. His father Dr. Rao is renowned doctor and mother is a mathematician who has great command over Tamil literature. Born a child prodigy, he learnt calculus when he was only 4. At the age 11, Ambati graduated from high school; at the age of 13, he graduated from New York University and finally became the world’s youngest doctor from Mount Sinai School of Medicine at the age 17.
While completing his ophthalmology residency at Harvard University, he developed strategies to reverse corneal angiogenesis. Ambati is a highly esteemed personality in medical world and is known for providing excellent medical services, spreading knowledge and treating complicated diseases, introducing creative strategies and techniques to enhance medical health across the world.
Accomplishments and Awards:
As a student, Ambati won several science contests that include Westinghouse Science Talent Search and International Science & Engineering Fair.
In 1995, He received the prestigious Raja-Lakshmi Award from Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation, Chennai.
At the age of 14, he co-authored a book on AIDS to spread awareness about the myths related to the disease in 1989
His contribution is significant in correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism through LASIK
