New York City based Birchbox, a company that offers customers to explore and purchase products in a personalized way, was founded in September 2010 by Hayley Barna, along with her Harvard Business School friend and Birchbox co-founder, Katia Beauchamp. The company has transformed the retail process by sending four or five deluxe products’ trial packs to premium members who, in return, pay Birchbox $10 per month. The members can also buy full-size version of any sample or product of their wish with some educational content on how to use the products and what are the benefits using them.

Birchbox was launched in 2010 with 660 members and within one year its membership exceeded 45,000 mark and employed 25 people. Top brands including Deborah Lippmann, Kiehl’s, Benefit, and Stila have partnered with Birchbox and are reportedly making a lot of money. In the beginning of 2012, Birchbox ventured and extended into men’s products, which has received equal acclaim and attention. The company has been profiled on several famous magazines including Time, Bloomberg Businessweek, InStyle and Marie Claire and others.
